Industrial Logistics Raízen

Created from the Shell and Cosan business combination, Raízen is one of the largest Brazilian companies and currently has the largest sugarcane crushing capacity in the world. To keep a company of this size prominent in its segment and in the world, all areas face diverse challenges.

To assist in the Industrial Logistics processes, some Excel spreadsheets were used internally that were not effective, due to their slowness and mainly because they did not allow identification of the points where conflicts occurred. This department of the company is responsible for the internal movement of sugar (including some external movements between mills and warehouses of the company), bagasse and waste. Due to the size of the company, all these tasks are complex and require great monitoring.

Given the quality of service provided by Iteris in other departments of Raízen, we were recommended to develop a project that solved the problems of Industrial Logistics indicators.

Main challenges

  • The legacy system migration from Raízen to SAP, which occurred in parallel with the development of the BI project by Iteris.
  • Learning about sugar logistics and the rules of business seasonality for the proper development of the project.

Solutions

Efficiency and fraud indicators were elaborated, such as: manual weighing, freight in transit, loading performance, among others, to solve the main problems of Industrial Logistics. In the development of this project, the entire QlikView platform was used for data loads (ETL), storage database (QVDs) and reports (charts and WEB tables).

Through the dashboard it’s possible to control access to the data according to the logged-in Windows user and the data refresh is done every two hours. In addition, there is a PDF report that is extracted and sent to the units, to charge the carriers regarding the refund of the sugar lost during the transportation. In total there are eleven WEB views available to managers and administrators of industrial logistics and other units distributed throughout Brazil.

Aftermath

After the project deployment, the immediately perceived benefit was the optimization of the time of availability of the indicators. The reports used to take a week to be generated, and now it was only a matter of a few hours. By enabling the rapid identification of conflicts, the decision making happens with more agility. Another determining factor for the success of the project was the reliability brought about by the automation of the information processing, besides the peace of mind in knowing that the errors will be identified and there will be time to solve them.
